There are many local places of interest without having to drive too far away, so here's a few recommendations from our own family days out...
Historic Bridgnorth
Highley Village
Bridgnorth is noted for its stunning view, historic railway, castle ruins and is only 10.9 miles away from us! A historic market town with High and Low areas on the valley side. The easy way up to the High Town is the Bridgnorth Cliff Railway, a must do if you are paying the town a visit! Linking the Low Town on the Severn with the High Town and castle. Unavoidable on Bridgnorth’s charming High Street is the half-timbered Town Hall. You can go inside this monument all year. Fitting into this, the Charter Market isn’t huge, but it has a very diverse offering all from Bridgnorth locals. In spring and summer this coincides with special events like a beer festival in May, Bridgnorth’s Street Fest in July and the Music and Arts Festival at the end of August. In neat gardens atop the hill you’ll discover the twisted remains of Bridgnorth Castle, St Marys and st Leonards churches. When it comes to family days out in the UK, you’re truly spoilt for choice in Bridgnorth. It is a must see family day out.
Many visitors to Highley make straight for the Station and Museum on the Severn Valley Railway. This is arguably Britain's premier heritage railway and has been beautifully restored.
Within Highley, there are many attractive walks. It is possible to do a variety of circular walks, ranging from a mile or so to over 10 miles, all starting from the station. Highley has an open-air swimming pool, open during the summer months, a 9-hole golf course, a golf driving range and the Severn Centre which provides a host of sporting and leisure activities. Highley village is perfect for a relaxing holiday but also hosts many local amenities to accommodate your stay. Friendly local pubs and numerous takeaway restaurants a little something for everyone.
Ironbridge Gorge
A World Heritage Site and the beating heart of the Industrial Revolution, the Ironbridge Gorge is one of Shropshire's top attractions. Only 17 miles from us! Ironbridge Gorge is known throughout the world as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. Home to 10 amazing museums and one beautiful Valley that make for an unforgettable experience. One of Shropshire's top attractions but please do not be deceived by their heritage. Nowadays the area is far from industrial. Although the revolution started here, most of the factories are long gone and the natural beauty of the Gorge has been restored. They have a picturesque medieval town full of shops, restaurants and spectacular scenic gardens, with a maze of footpaths, bridleways and country lanes. A perfect collection of family friendly days out at Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site.
Telford Town Centre
Thanks to recent multi-million pound investment, Telford Town Centre has undergone a true transformation, and now provides a huge range of things to do, see and experience for the whole family, whatever the weather. Take a trip to Southwater, the vibrant, purpose-designed and built leisure quarter packed-full of bars, restaurants, leisure activities including a cinema, bowling alley and an ice rink!
Walk around the scenic lake and pools and you’ll see children playing, adults battling over chess and draughts, walk bit further and you come across Telford Town Park, recently voted as the UK’s best urban park. There are countless free play areas, plus nature trails, a splash zone, mini golf, and even a high ropes course to conquer. Indulge in a little retail therapy in Telford’s indoor super-shopping centre, which is home to a huge range of top-name stores and which provides a haven for browsers and buyers alike.

Daniels Mill
Daniels Mill and it’s impressive waterwheel have been carefully restored to it’s former glory. The watermill is virtually unaltered since the 18th Century and was in the ownership of the same family for over 250 years. It is now a Charitable Trust whose purpose is to operate and maintain the Mill for future generations. Daniels Mill is a fully working watermill set in the idyllic Shropshire countryside, deep in a wooded valley crossed by the 19th century viaduct carrying the Severn Valley Railway to Bridgnorth.
Black Country Living Museum
An immersive experience from start to finish, Black Country Living Museum is an award-winning open air museum that tells the story of one of the very first industrialised landscapes in Britain. You'll explore over forty carefully reconstructed shops, houses and industrial areas that represent the Black Country's story. You'll learn how steam power, human ingenuity and an increasingly interconnected world transformed this region into a manufacturing powerhouse. You'll meet our historic characters who'll tell you stories of what it was really like to live and work during this revolutionary period of history. Most importantly, you'll see history brought to life before your eyes - you'll hear the clang of hammers; smell the smoke billowing from red brick chimneys; and maybe even taste the best fish and chips in the world.
Wyre Forest offers a great day outdoors with activities to suit all. Enjoy our 3 way marked walking trails, the family cycle route, bike hire, horse trails, Go Ape, play area and onsite café, all set in an ever-changing window on nature in this breath-taking setting. The forest encompasses a vast area of natural beauty and no two visits will be the same as the seasons turn. They have a wide variety of events on offer including a weekly Parkrun, Health Walks, Toddler Forest Fun and monthly Family Forest adventures, as well as lots of one off events.
Safari Park
West Midland Safari and Leisure Park is a safari park located in Bewdley in Worcestershire, England. just 10 miles away from Coombys Farm. The park holds over 165 species of exotic animals, among other attractions such as a small theme park. It's the perfect family day out.
The Ship Inn
Overlooking the River Severn, this relaxed pub with rooms dating from 1770 is situated just 1.5 miles away by car but for those fancying a relaxed evening walk, it's just 15 minutes upstream. 'The Ship', as it's known locally, is just below Highley station on the SVR heritage line. As a Freehouse, it offers a range of award winning Ales alongside other drinks. Food is served right through the week with sunny weekend afternoons being the best time to take in the outdoor riverside seating area. Raining? Why not head inside for a piping hot Sunday carvery. Specials nights run Tuesday through Thursday so there's bound to be something for everyone here...
Coombys Farm Fishing
The mighty River Severn is Britain’s longest river, it runs from the Welsh Cambrian Mountains, through the beautiful Shropshire heartlands and on to Worcestershire and the flatlands of the Severn Estuary. This stretch of river is the well known in fishing circles as`Stanley Waters' and is administered by the Birmingham Anglers Association (BAA). The river boasts both coarse and game fisheries, with carp, roach, barbel, tench and pike being among the most common fish species. You will need to obtain a fishing licence with the BAA.
